On 27th January 2001, a visa camp was organized in Philadelphia by the Consulate General of India, New York in collaboration with the Indian American community at the India Community Center. The coordinating agency was the Malayalee Association of Greater Philadelphia (MAP). The visa camp was widely welcomed by residents of Philadelphia and neighbouring areas as an extra service provided to the community by the Government of India through its Consulate General in New York.

The visa camp was inaugurated by Mr. H.S. Aswathanarayana, Chairman, Council of Indian Organisations in Greater Philadelphia in the presence of Consul General Mrs. Shashi Tripathi and Mr. Koshy, eminent Philanthropist, who flew all the way from Washington, Seattle to attend this inaugural visa camp in Philadelphia.

In view of the success of the camp, Consul(Visa) Mr. Santosh Jha announced that the next camp in Philadelphia would be organized on 12th of May, 2001.

Consulate General of India, New York plans to hold similar visa camps in outlying areas in its jurisdiction during the year.
